Choosing the right wood. Everything starts there.

As 2026 begins, MBD is preparing to release two baits this year: BUGROCK WAKE and the RAT bait. Both have been tested extensively over the past several years, and I’ve finally reached a point where I can release them with full confidence.

BUGROCK WAKE in particular went through countless test models over a long period of time. In the end, the version that was chosen was actually the very first prototype. That story is something I’d like to share properly when the bait is released.

MBD baits are made from wood. Every single bait is built using wood sourced from Kochi Prefecture in Japan, where MBD is based. Hinoki(cypress) from Kochi grows in a warm, rainy climate and steep mountainous terrain, which gives it a beautiful aroma, excellent durability, and a reputation as one of Japan’s finest materials—used in everything from architecture to tools. By selecting high-quality wood, I’m able to achieve not only durability, but also a stable, well-balanced bait that takes advantage of the material’s natural characteristics.

I always inspect the wood with my own eyes and have it milled into blocks by someone I trust. It takes time and effort, but by valuing this process, I’m able to choose wood that I’m truly satisfied with. Just recently, I went to pick up a new batch of milled wood.

This batch is dedicated to BUGROCK WAKE.
As we move toward the warmer days of spring, I’ll carefully carve each one, piece by piece.
